Turkish road signs and their meanings

Turkish road signs follow the same international system used across Europe, so the shape and colour tell you most of the meaning. A few signs use Turkish words, such as DUR (stop). Below you will find the most common signs with pictures and English meanings.

Signs people confuse
- Stop vs Give way: at STOP you must always stop fully. At GIVE WAY you only stop if traffic is coming.
- No entry vs Road closed: the red sign with a white bar forbids entry in that direction. The white circle with a red border closes the road in both directions.
- No parking vs No stopping: one diagonal line bans parking only. The X bans stopping too.
- One-way road vs Ahead only: an arrow on a blue square is information (one-way road). An arrow in a blue circle is an order (ahead only).

FAQ
What does DUR mean on a Turkish road sign?
DUR means STOP. You must stop completely at the line, even if the road is empty, and give way before continuing.
What is the difference between No entry and Road closed signs?
No entry (red circle with a white bar) forbids entering in that direction. Road closed (white circle with a red border) means no vehicles may enter from either direction.
What is the difference between No parking and No stopping?
No parking (one diagonal line) allows brief stops to drop off passengers. No stopping or parking (a red X) allows neither.
What does a yellow diamond sign mean in Turkey?
It marks a priority road. You have the right of way at junctions until you see the end of priority road sign.
