Speed limits in Turkey 2026: city, intercity and motorway table

Speed limits in Turkey depend on the type of vehicle and the type of road. For a car the limit is 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on two-way intercity roads, 110 km/h on divided roads and 120 km/h on motorways. In 2026 the speeding fine system also changed: the old percentage bands are gone, and fines now depend on how many km/h you are over the limit. This guide explains the limits, the new fines and the speed questions you can expect in the written exam.
Speed limits table (km/h)
Turkish road rules use a few road types. It helps to know the Turkish words, because you will see them in the exam and in driving lessons:
- In town (şehir içi): roads inside a built-up area (yerleşim yeri).
- Intercity (şehirlerarası): two-way roads between towns, with traffic in both directions on the same carriageway.
- Divided road (bölünmüş yol): a road where the two directions are separated.
- Motorway (otoyol): the highest class of road.

These are the general limits. If a sign on the road shows a different speed limit, you must follow the sign. In rain, fog or heavy traffic you must drive below the limit, at a speed that suits the conditions. The limit is a maximum, not a target.
New speeding fines (from 27 February 2026)
The fine now depends on how many km/h you are over the limit. The bands are different for roads in town and intercity roads.

If you pay the fine within 15 days of being notified (tebliğ), you get a 25% discount. For example, a 2,000 TL fine paid in time costs 1,500 TL.
"Licence seized" (ehliyete el koyma) means your licence is taken away for that period and you cannot drive. For the three highest bands this comes on top of the fine. For all traffic fines, not only speeding, see our guide to traffic fines in Turkey.
Is there a tolerance?
The old bands, such as 10%, have been removed. In the new system a fine starts when you go 6 km/h over the limit in town, or 11 km/h over the limit on intercity roads. So on a 50 km/h road in town you can be fined at 56 km/h. On a 90 km/h intercity road, fines start at 101 km/h.
Also keep in mind that the speed on your speedometer and your real speed can be slightly different. Do not plan to drive "just under" the fine threshold. Aim to stay at or below the limit shown on the sign.

Speed questions in the driving licence exam
Speed rules are part of the Traffic and Environment subject (Trafik ve Çevre), which has 23 of the 50 questions in the written e-exam. These are the points that come up most often:
- Speed limit for a car in a built-up area: 50 km/h.
- Following distance (takip mesafesi): a practical rule often asked in the exam is that your following distance in metres should be half your speed. At 90 km/h, that means at least 45 metres.
- Speed and braking distance: the faster you go, the longer your stopping distance. On wet or icy roads the braking distance gets longer.
- Speed limit signs: a number inside a circle with a red border shows the maximum speed. You can find these signs in our Turkish road signs guide.

Tips for foreign drivers
- Learn the road types in Turkish. Exam questions and your instructor may use words like şehir içi, şehirlerarası, bölünmüş yol and otoyol. If you know them, the limits are easy to match.
- Think in km/h. All limits and signs in Turkey are in km/h. If you learnt to drive in a country that uses miles, take extra care.
- The sign always wins. The table gives general limits. A local sign can set a lower (or different) limit, and that is the one you must follow.
- Take the exam in English if it helps. Foreign nationals can take the written e-exam in English. Tell your driving school at registration or at least 3 working days before the exam. No interpreter is provided. See the driving test in English for details.

What is the speed limit in towns in Turkey?
Inside built-up areas the general speed limit for cars, buses, trucks and motorcycles is 50 km/h. If a sign shows a different limit, you must follow the sign.
What is the motorway speed limit for cars in Turkey?
On motorways (otoyol) the speed limit for cars is 120 km/h.
At what speed does a speeding fine start?
In the new 2026 system a fine starts when you are 6 km/h over the limit in town, or 11 km/h over the limit on intercity roads.
Can my licence be taken away for speeding?
Yes. If you are 46 km/h or more over the limit in town, or 51 km/h or more over the limit on intercity roads, your licence is seized for between 30 and 90 days, on top of the fine.
Is there a discount for paying a speeding fine early?
Yes. If you pay within 15 days of being notified, you pay 25% less.
