Driving licence classes in Turkey 2026: which vehicle, which minimum age?

In Turkey, driving licences (sürücü belgesi, usually called ehliyet) are divided into 17 classes according to the type of vehicle. The class you need depends on the vehicle you want to drive and on your age. The most common one is the class B car licence, but you need an A class for motorcycles, a C class for trucks and a D class for buses. This guide explains every class in plain English, with minimum ages and the 2026 fees.

The letter "E" in a class name always means "with a trailer" (römork). For example, BE is a class B vehicle towing a heavier trailer.
Motorcycle licences: M, A1, A2, A
Motorcycle licences are graded by engine power. Class M is for mopeds. With A1 you can ride small motorcycles up to 125 cc, so it is the usual choice for people who want to start riding at 16. A2 covers mid-range motorcycles up to 35 kW.
For motorcycles with no power limit you need class A. You can get it directly at 24. If you have held an A2 licence for at least 2 years, you can move up to class A at 20.
If you are not sure which class fits your motorcycle, check the engine size (cc) and power (kW) in the vehicle documents and ask your driving school.
Car licences: B, BE, B1
Class B is the most common licence. It covers cars and light vans up to 3,500 kg. Holders of a class B licence can also drive class M and class F vehicles. If you want to tow a heavy trailer, such as a caravan or a boat trailer, you need class BE. Class B1 is for four-wheeled motorcycles such as ATVs.

Truck licences: C1, C1E, C, CE
Class C1 covers trucks between 3,500 and 7,500 kg and can be obtained at 18. Heavier trucks need class C, and articulated lorries and trucks with trailers need class CE. For C and CE you must be at least 21 and you must already hold a class B licence.
If you will use a truck commercially, for example in the goods transport business, you also need an SRC certificate (SRC belgesi) in addition to your licence. Class C and D licences are valid for a shorter period than class B, and they are renewed at set intervals with a medical check.
Bus and minibus licences: D1, D1E, D, DE
Class D1 covers minibuses for up to 17 people including the driver, and can be obtained at 21. Larger buses need class D, and the minimum age is 24. For buses and minibuses with a trailer there are the D1E and DE classes. For these classes you must also hold a class B licence first. An SRC certificate is compulsory for passenger transport as well.
Tractors and construction machines: F and G
Class F is for tractors with rubber tyres. Class G is for construction machines. People who will operate construction machines may also be asked for an operator certificate (operatörlük belgesi). Your employer and your driving school can tell you which documents you need.

Licence fees by class (2026)
The licence fee (harç) is a government fee that depends on the class:

On top of the licence fee, every class also pays a card fee of 1,690 TL, an e-exam fee of 1,250 TL and a practical driving test fee of 2,000 TL. For classes not listed in the table, ask the driving school where you will register for the current fee.
These are official fees only. The driving school's own course fee is separate, so ask the school for a full written price before you sign up.
Is the written exam the same for every class?
Yes. Whichever class you apply for, the e-exam has 50 questions and lasts 45 minutes, and it covers the same four subjects: Traffic and Environment (23 questions), First Aid (12), Vehicle Technology (Motor ve Araç Tekniği, 9) and Traffic Etiquette (Trafik Adabı, 6). The pass mark is 70 in every class, which means at least 35 correct answers. So the testcim practice questions are useful whether you are preparing for a motorcycle, car, truck or bus licence. The difference is in the practical training and the driving test: in each class, the test is taken in a vehicle of that class. If you already hold a licence, you may be exempt from some lessons for a new class. Your driving school will tell you which lessons you still need.
Tips for foreign candidates
- Start with the class you really need. Most foreign residents need class B. If you only want to ride a small motorcycle, A1 or A2 may be enough.
- Take the written exam in your language. Foreign nationals can take the e-exam in English, Arabic, Russian, German, French, Persian or Chinese. Tell your driving school at registration or at least 3 working days before the exam. No interpreter is provided.
