Traffic fines in Turkey (2026)

A new law that took effect on 27 February 2026 (Law No. 7574) raised traffic fines in Turkey and made many of them grow with every repeat offence. Here are the amounts in English. They matter for tourists and residents alike, and the rules behind them come up in the driving exam.
What changed in 2026?
- Speeding fines are now based on how many km/h you exceed the limit by, not on percentages.
- Drink-driving costs 25,000 TL on the first offence.
- Red-light and phone fines increase with each repeat, and your licence can be suspended.

Alcohol limit and fines
The limit is 0.50 promil (0.5 g of alcohol per litre of blood) for private car drivers and 0.20 promil for commercial, official and passenger or goods transport drivers.

Above 1.00 promil, a criminal case can also be opened for endangering traffic safety. Coffee or a cold shower does not lower your promil. Only time does.

General limits for cars: 50 km/h in towns, 90 on two-way roads, 110 on divided roads and 120 on motorways.
Repeat offences
Red light: 10,000 TL the second time, 15,000 TL and a 30-day suspension the third time, 20,000 TL and 60 days the fourth, 30,000 TL and 90 days the fifth. The sixth time: 80,000 TL and the licence is cancelled.
Phone: 5,000 TL, then 10,000 TL, then 20,000 TL and a 30-day suspension from the third time, counted within one year.
Seat belt: the fourth offence within a year leads to a 30-day suspension.
Paying and the 25% discount
Fines paid within 15 days of notification get a 25% discount. You can check and pay fines on e-Devlet. To object, you must apply to the criminal court of peace within 15 days of notification. If you drive a rental car, the company is notified and usually charges the fine to your card.
