What does the pedestrian crossing sign mean in Turkey?
Last updated: 28 October 2026 · Sign code: B-14a · Information signs

In short: Turkey uses two pedestrian crossing signs: the red-bordered triangle (T-11) warns that a crossing is ahead, and the blue square (B-14a) marks the exact place of the crossing. When you see either, slow down and give way to people crossing.
What should you do when you see this sign?
- Slow down as you approach and be ready to stop.
- Where there are no traffic lights, give way to pedestrians on the crossing and stop if needed.
- Do not pass a vehicle that has stopped in front of the crossing at speed; there may be a pedestrian you cannot see.
- Do not stop, park or overtake on or near the crossing.
Where and why is it used?
Warning signs are placed before the hazard: when you see the triangle, the crossing is still ahead. The blue square stands at the crossing itself and shows a pedestrian walking over stripes in a white triangle. Overtaking at pedestrian crossings is not allowed.
Blue (green on motorways) square or rectangle Give information about the road, directions and services. They do not ban or require anything.

Question 1
In the picture, lorry 2 in the right lane has stopped in front of a marked pedestrian crossing. What should the driver of car 1, travelling in the left lane in the same direction, do?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: B) Slow down and be ready to stop at the crossing
At a crossing without signals, pedestrians who are crossing or about to cross have priority (Traffic Law Art. 74). A large vehicle stopped in the next lane may be hiding a pedestrian in front of it. A defensive driver slows down, is ready to stop and lets the pedestrian cross safely.
Question 2
At a pedestrian crossing without traffic lights, a pedestrian is crossing. What should the driver do?
Show answer and explanation
Correct answer: C) Stop and wait for the pedestrian to cross
Pedestrians have priority at crossings. The driver must stop and give way.
