Driving licence penalty points in Turkey: what happens at 100 points?
Updated 2 November 2026 · 5 min read
Every traffic fine in Turkey also adds penalty points to the driver's record. If you go over 100 points within one year (counted back from the date of the offence), your licence is suspended for 2 months. A second time in the same year means 4 months; a third time means referral to a criminal court of peace. You can check your points with the e-Devlet service Sürücü Belgesi ve Şahıslara Yazılan Ceza Sorgulama.
What are penalty points?
For each fine given under the Road Traffic Law, the driver also gets penalty points. The points for each offence are set in a table annexed to the Road Traffic Regulation (Annex 35) and recorded in the police system. For fine amounts, see traffic fines in Turkey.
What happens at 100 points?
| Situation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Over 100 points within 1 year, first time | Licence suspended for 2 months; returned at the end once you document the required training. |
| Second time in the same year | Licence suspended for 4 months; returned if a psychotechnical assessment and a psychiatric examination find no obstacle. |
| Third time in the same year | Under the law the licence is cancelled indefinitely; the driver is referred to a criminal court of peace. |
Points above 100 at the moment you pass the limit do not carry over. But points you collect by driving between reaching 100 and handing in your licence do count in the next calculation.
When do penalty points expire?
There is no fixed reset date. With every new offence the system looks back over the last 12 months, so points older than one year are not counted towards the 100.

Is it different for new drivers?
Yes. First-time licence holders are probationary drivers for 2 years. The probationary licence is cancelled if, in that period, the driver goes over 75 penalty points, drives with more than 0.20 promille of alcohol, or commits an offence that requires temporary suspension. They then have to go back to driving school and pass the exams again. This rule was last changed on 24 July 2026 (Law No. 7590).
Can you drive while your licence is suspended?
No. A driver caught driving during the suspension period is punished under Article 36 of the Road Traffic Law.
