How to pass the practical driving test in Turkey: mistakes that fail you and tips

You take the practical driving test (direksiyon sınavı) after you pass the written e-exam and finish your compulsory driving lessons. The examiner is less interested in how skilful a driver you are and more interested in whether you drive safely and by the rules. Some mistakes end the test on the spot. This guide explains what is checked, which mistakes to avoid, and the Turkish instructions you are likely to hear.
How the test works
The test is taken in your driving school's car, under the supervision of an exam commission (sınav komisyonu). It starts before you even move: your preparation inside the car is checked first. Then the examiner assesses how you pull away, how you drive in traffic, and how you do manoeuvres such as parking, a hill start (rampa kalkışı) and reversing.
Every mistake loses you points, depending on how serious it is. Mistakes that put safety at risk make you fail the test.
What the examiner checks
- Preparation: Seat and mirror adjustment, and your seat belt. Do these first, as soon as you get in the car.
- Pulling away: Moving off without stalling, by balancing the clutch and the accelerator. Check your mirrors and look over your shoulder before you move.

- Lane and steering control: Driving steadily, inside your lane.
- Mirrors and signals: Checking your mirrors and signalling before every turn and every lane change.
- Junctions: Approaching junctions at a suitable speed and following the rules of right of way (geçiş üstünlüğü).
- Signs and lights: Obeying road signs, traffic lights and road markings.
- Following distance and manoeuvres: Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front, parking and the hill start.
Mistakes that fail you at once
If you make one of these mistakes, you fail the test, however well you do in the other parts:
- The examiner has to step in and use the brake or take the steering wheel
- Driving through a red light, or not coming to a full stop at a STOP (DUR) sign
- Not giving way to a pedestrian or to a vehicle that has right of way
- Any action that would cause an accident or put traffic in serious danger
Most common mistakes
- Signalling without checking the mirror, or not signalling at all. The order is always: mirror, signal, check, manoeuvre.
- Rolling back on a hill. Practise hill starts with the handbrake a lot during your lessons.
- Hitting the line or the kerb when parking. Go slowly and correct your position if you need to.
- Stalling the car. On its own this does not end the test, but it loses you points and makes you more nervous.
- Not slowing down at a pedestrian crossing. If there is a pedestrian, always stop.
Turkish instructions to know
The written e-exam can be taken in English, but the practical test takes place on the road and the examiner usually gives instructions in Turkish. Learn the short instructions an examiner commonly uses, so you can react calmly. Practise them with your instructor during your lessons.

A good exercise: ask your instructor to give you all directions in Turkish during your last few lessons. By test day, the words will feel familiar.

Test day tips
- Make your checks easy to see. Turn your head slightly when you check a mirror, so the examiner can see that you are checking.
- Do not rush. Driving fast earns you no extra points in the test. Driving slowly and safely does.
- Ask again if you do not understand an instruction. It is better to ask than to turn the wrong way. For foreign candidates this matters even more: a short "Tekrar eder misiniz?" (Could you repeat that?) is fine.
- Do not dwell on a mistake. One small mistake usually does not end the test. Stay calm and carry on.
